Sports massage is a form of bodywork geared toward participants in athletics. It is used to help prevent injuries, prepare the body for athletic activity and maintain it in optimal condition, and help athletes recover from workouts and injuries.
Sports massage has three basic forms: pre-event, post-event, and maintenance.
It is carried out to help prevent serious athletic injury. It helps to warm up the muscles, stretching them and making them flexible for optimal athletic performance.
A pre-event massage stimulates the flow of blood and nutrients to the muscles, reduces muscle tension, loosens the muscles, and produces a feeling of psychological readiness.
Whenever athletes exercise heavily, their muscles suffer microtrauma. Small amounts of swelling occur in the muscle because of tiny tears.
Post-event sports massage helps reduce the swelling caused by microtraumas; loosens tired, stiff muscles; helps maintain flexibility; promotes blood flow to the muscle to remove lactic acid and waste b

Post-event sports massage helps reduce the swelling caused by microtraumas; loosens tired, stiff muscles; helps maintain flexibility; promotes blood flow to the muscle to remove lactic acid and waste build-up; and reduces cramping.
In addition, post-event massage helps speed the athlete's recovery time and alleviates pulls, strains, and soreness.
It is carried out at least once a week as a regular part of athletic training programmes, (professional athletes may have a daily maintenance massage).
Maintenance massage increases the flow of blood and nutrients to the muscles. It also keeps the tissues loose so that different layers of muscle slide easily over each other.

It is carried out at least once a week as a regular part of athletic training programmes, (professional athletes may have a daily maintenance massage).
Maintenance massage increases the flow of blood and nutrients to the muscles. It also keeps the tissues loose so that different layers of muscle slide easily over each other.
Maintenance sports massage also helps reduce the development of scar tissue while increasing flexibility and range of motion.
Are you one of the many amateur athletes guilty of 'not stretching enough'? Do you come to the end of your run or activity, get showered and changed, and wonder why you're stiff the following day? Well, with PNF the stretching is done for you! The muscles are warmed up with a massage and then PNF is carried out.
PNF stretching is a set of stretching techniques commonly used in clinical environments to enhance both active and passive range of motion to improve motor performance and aid rehabilitation.
PNF is considered an optimal stretching method when the aim is to increase the range of motion, especially as regards short-term changes. PNF can be used to supplement daily stretching and to make quick gains in range of motion, for example, to help improve your performance.
In addition to being safe and time efficient, the rapidly achievable gains in range of motion may also help promote compliance with an exercise and/or rehabilitation programme.
When we are stressed, our muscles become tense. This tension restricts the flow of oxygen and nutrients into the muscle fibres and prevents adequate disposal of waste products – and you become sluggish, tired, and achy.
